(Written from the perspective of Zirdalen.)
Good in stews, better on toast,
Softened marrow spreads the most!
Rich with flavor and creamy like butter,
A treat bound to send hearts aflutter!
Sturdy columns of alabaster,
All intertwined in support of their master,
Tibula, Sternum, Femur and Humerus,
And more! They’re quite numerous!
Stripped of flesh and bound by string,
Puppeted, they dance macabre
Rattling haphazard, wordless they sing
Warning of the hangman and his gruesome job
A shield to what grants life to our human race,
A memento of us once all else has turned to dust,
Death’s Head ever remains our final face.
Beneath skin, beneath hair, beneath name
Our osteal companions are all the same
Empty sockets, curved cages
Haunting in stature throughout the ages
Good in stews, better on toast,
The skeleton, our perennial host,
Enduring long years, cracks and breaks,
My silent friends, no matter their state.
