I’ve been in, and frankly continue to be in a state of varying levels of depression for, really since March. It got worse after quitting my job/being soft fired or whatever you want to call it, so writing about my life or thoughts just kind of felt superfluous. Very stream of consciousness right now because what made me finally want to say something is this goddamned work of genre-twisting beauty:

I never heard of the band until today, and only heard of it because a friend with killer taste recommended it after I heard another cool song (Sixteen Days by This Mortal Coil) on of all things, a trailer for a game I won’t play because it’s too scary. Enough about me though.

The fucking refrain, man. This kind of winding, spiraling guitar riff while this girl tweaks Chuck D’s commanding style into just, audio travel. Like, the sonic version of a winding path at high speed through an empty road with no end in sight and no desire to stop, slow or speed up. Just persist. The way it starts off, growling riffs and these light bongo-esque drums.

Trip hop and riffs version of prime Public Enemy rap. It shouldn’t work so well but inject the riff into my veins man. Like, my night feels better, I’m more animated, more engaged with what else I’m writing, feeling like already adding another chapter to the Alleria/Xal’atath fanfic even though I haven’t got any more material to draft from. It makes me want to actually do stuff again. It’s really like the first time I heard In Living Colour’s Cult of Personality. As an aside, for anyone else who only ever heard that song from them before—the rest of their discog’s great too. A bit fun, still rocking.

I really need to work on the music musing section of this site. Good outlet. “I got a letter from the government the other day” as a lead-in to this lyrical descent into darkness, my God it’s striking. Fuck this song is great.
